The Begining

This is entitled, ' The Beginning' mainly because I need a place to start... it really is only the beginning of my very first blog!
I don't really know very much about blogs. This one begins because Emily suggested it to me this morning during her father's day call! She said email gets lost, but I can always send friends and family to my blog. Too, I can post selected pictures and friends and family can comment and contribute! That sounds like fun!
So, here it is, creatively named, mike and bev!
I suspect that all entries will be similarly straight forward and interesting only to a few... nevertheless, enjoy and thanks for stopping by!

Hey Mike,
Thanks for the update! I'm staying at Emily's place in NYC. My mom and Emily arrive on Thursday, so I'm wandering the city until they get here. Jake and I spent a fabulous week in NH. Camping, biking, swimming, kayaking...it's a great place to spend the summer! We look forward to more updates.

love,
t

i want to see some more pics!!

i also can't wait to visit. i wish i was in more of a position to pick up and go, but i have a lot of workers who depend on me for their and their families' livelihood at the moment.

it should be very easy to take photos and post them into sets and collections [flickr talk]. don't forget to take pictures of your favorite plants in the botanic garden so i can start thinking about what to use in the landscape.

i love landscaping - as you all know, i'm sure. my landscapes are getting to be very good. i've been doing a number of very, very large residential landscapes lately and have been studying different approaches. in april, i'm giving a seminar on how to approach landscaping w/ natives for very large properties. supposedly, it's already filled up. i have 3 sites over 100 acres each [in the bay area!!] and several other large ones i'm working on - including one in santa fe and one in oregon.

although it's not entirely applicable to small sites, i am trying to apply this approach anyways. it's about organizing the manmade landscape into a series of access points to the surrounding nature. i use trees, rocks, pathways, roads, etc. to draw the attention towards important views or to block views of disturbing ones. the goal is to draw people out into the surrounding natural world. it's kind of the opposite of traditional landscaping here in america - where plants are used as adornment for our houses. i have begun to enjoy landscapes which blend the structures into their environment rather than to draw attention to them.

next wknd, i'm going to a moonlight dinner on mount diablo. it's a fundraiser to expand the parklands on that wonderful mountain just east of me. i'm going to have a table w/ my photos of the mountain and the unusual plants there. i'm meeting w/ the other 250 guests at a spot where we'll be picked up in a helicopter and dropped off in an isolated place way up top. it's going to be catered by one of the top companies and there will be live music etc. it's a pretty fancy affair. one of my clients bought me two tickets.

i look forward to seeing you all in mexico - maybe for christmas or new years? will you be there? or maybe thanksgiving? xxoo peter

p.s. i just bought a used fancy truck which looks like it belongs to a mexican mafioso - down to the tinted windows!
